Pupil Parliament
Pupil Parliament is a team of students and staff members who collaborate and are dedicated to making our school better for everyone. It gives every child in our school a voice and enables them to meaningfully contribute their ideas. In addition to teaching the children about how the United Kingdom Parliament operates, the Pupil Parliament fosters student leadership possibilities and helps them acquire important debating, organisational, and communication skills.
What are the aims of Pupil Parliament?
-To make our school a better place for everyone in our school community.
-To ensure everyone has a fair say.
-To ensure that we listen to and consider everyone’s views.
-To act when decisions have been made or explain reasons when actions cannot be taken.
Who is part of Pupil Parliament?
The model for our Pupil Parliament is based on the UK Parliament which is made up of three distinct parts:
· The Monarchy
· The House of Lords
· The House of Commons
The Monarchy
The Monarchy is represented by the Headteacher, Mr Mugan. It is the role of the Monarch to sign off laws / new ideas once they have been agreed in House of Lords and House of Commons).
The House of Lords
The House of Lord is led by Mrs Noblett. She provides guidance and expertise to departments and committees and works alongside the House of Commons to create new laws (positive changes) for our school. All other members of staff are members of The House of Lords.
The House of Commons
The house of commons is made up of pupils from year 3 to 6 who are elected democratically by their peers on our annual polling day, which takes place each September. The members of pupil parliament (MPs) represent their peers at regular meetings and join departments to focus on improving our school.
How it works – elections
-Pupils in Year 3 – 6 nominate themselves by completing an application form. Applications are shortlisted based on whether all questions are fully answered. Shortlisted candidates present their application in a short video, to all children and staff in school. All children and staff are given a ballot card to cast one vote. The 14 children with the most votes are given Minister roles. Where there is a tie, the casting vote will be submitted by the Monarch. All other children will be given roles within each department – up to a maximum of two children per department.
How it works – Meetings
The Pupil Parliament meet once per half term with all Ministers in attendance. Suggestions can be placed into the suggestion boxes in classrooms or into the post box near the school library. Suggestions can be discussed prior to the Pupil Parliament meetings by the Primary Minister, the Deputy Primary Minister, Hansard, Speaker of the House, Mrs Noblett, as they will inform the agenda. At the meeting, ministers will discuss the agenda and suggestions. They will discuss feedback from previous meetings and set out an action plan. As part of the action plan, ministers may delegate to the relevant Departments to ensure that actions are completed.
How it works – Feedback
Ministers will feedback to their own departments after each meeting. Members of Pupil Parliament will deliver feedback during class discussions and Key Stage assemblies. A newsletter will also be published for children and parents. Ministers will feedback to staff once per term.
How it works – terms of office and By-elections
Terms of office will be 2-years. By-elections will be held to replace Year 6 children every September. By-elections will be held to replace Ministers and department teams after 2-year terms of office.
